Start by identifying the pattern. If every subtitle is early or late by roughly the same amount, apply one global offset. If only a few captions are wrong, retime those individual cues. If the mismatch grows from the beginning to the end of the video, do not apply one blanket shift-inspect the project timing and source media before rebuilding or partially retiming the captions.
Also confirm that the spoken audio and picture are aligned before editing subtitles. If lip movements, actions, and audio do not match, the underlying edit needs attention first.
Identify the Timing Pattern Before Moving Captions
Use the same three checkpoints every time: an early spoken line, one near the middle, and one close to the end.
A constant offset can appear after trimming the beginning of a video, cutting sections, re-encoding media, or using subtitles whose timestamps still refer to an earlier version of the edit. In that case, the subtitle cues may all retain their original timing while the edited video begins at a different point.
Before changing anything, play each checkpoint more than once. Listen for the first clear word, watch for pauses, and use visible speech or action changes as reference points. This makes it easier to distinguish a genuine timing problem from an imprecise first impression.
Fix a Constant Subtitle Offset with One Global Shift
A global shift moves every subtitle timestamp by the same amount. It is the right correction only when the amount of error stays consistent across the timeline.
The direction is simple:

When a tool applies a true uniform shift, it changes timing rather than caption text or formatting. Still, duplicate the subtitle track or save a separate version before making a large adjustment.
Retime Individual Captions for Local Errors
Do not move the whole subtitle track because one or two captions are wrong. Local mistakes often come from an imperfect auto-caption break, a revised voiceover line, a pause that was interpreted as speech, or an edit that changed one portion of the timeline.
A practical approach is to work in two passes:

Treat Growing Drift as a Project Timing Problem
Progressive drift is different from a fixed offset. A subtitle track might look nearly correct at 00:01:00 but be visibly late by 00:20:00. Moving every cue earlier may improve the end while making the beginning wrong.
When the amount of delay changes across the video, a uniform shift is not sufficient. The project needs partial retiming, a varying correction where the available tool supports it, or regenerated captions after the timing issue is resolved.
Inspect These Checkpoints Before Rebuilding Captions
Do not assume any one of these is the confirmed cause. They are the places to inspect when the mismatch changes across the timeline.
Once the edit timing is stable, choose the repair method that matches the evidence:
